Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law Consecrated

The Government of India is privileged to partner with the Royal Government of Bhutan for the development of the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law (JSW) – Bhutan’s first law school. The efforts to establish the law school were spearheaded by Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck pursuant to the Royal Charter issued on 21 February 2015 directing the establishment of a law school. The construction of a new campus of Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law in Pangbisa, Paro was undertaken as a model construction project to incorporate international best practices in construction quality and energy efficiency, while showcasing traditional Bhutanese architecture.

2. ​On 5 October, 2023, Ambassador Sudhakar Dalela attended the Tashi Rabney consecration ceremony of the Jigme Singye Wangchuck Law School in Paro, which was organized in presence of His Majesty The King of Bhutan, His Majesty The Fourth King of Bhutan, His Royal Highness The Gyalsey, Their Majesties The Gyalyums, members of the Royal Family of Bhutan. The Tashi Rabney was attended by His Eminence The Dorji Lopen, Ministers, senior officials from the Royal Government of Bhutan as well as the faculty and students of the newly constructed law school. ​

3. ​The Government of India has extended assistance of Nu. 1.4 billion for the development of the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law. The Project entailed construction of four storied Utse (central tower), Shab-khor (surrounding structure) hostel facilities, class rooms, dining facilities, library and the JSW law pillar. During the construction of the Project, special efforts were made to maintain Bhutanese essence and architectural elements. A dedicated team of local artisans handcrafted and designed intricate murals showcasing Bhutan’s cultural traditions.

4. ​India is also supporting JSW Law School for faculty, student, and academic exchanges with partner institutions in India, particularly the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru. The construction of the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law is a testament to the unique ties of friendship and cooperation between Bhutan and India, and the exemplary development partnership between the two countries.
