New Liquid Nitrogen Facility inaugurated in National Dairy Development Centre, Yusipang, Thimphu

A new Liquid Nitrogen Facility was inaugurated in National Dairy Development Centre, Yusipang, Thimphu on 03 May, 2023. The facility have been constructed as a Bhutan-India Development Partnership project under the 12th Five Year Plan of Bhutan. Lyonpo Yeshey Penjor, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock and Shri Niteen S Yeola, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of India, along with officials of the Royal Government of Bhutan attended the inauguration ceremony.

The newly commissioned Liquid Nitrogen Plant will enable the National Dairy Development Centre, Yusipang to meet the increasing demand of Liquid Nitrogen for bovine semen cryopreservation and cold chain maintenance of valuable bovine semen in the field with 89 Artificial Insemination (AI) Centres in fourteen Dzongkhags. The facility has been developed as part of the Livestock Development project aimed towards increasing production of Milk, Eggs, Chicken, Pork, Fish, Chevon and Honey in Bhutan.

In his remarks, Lyonpo Yeshey Penjor, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock highlighted the valuable role the Liquid Nitrogen facility will play in the bovine artificial insemination program of Bhutan. Noting the impact of the program on genetic upgradation of farm cattle to increase milk yields, he said that it will help in providing rural employment and increasing farm incomes.

Shri Niteen S Yeola, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of India recalled the long association of the Government of India with the Royal Government of Bhutan in the field of Agriculture and Livestock development and reiterated GoI’s commitment to further strengthening the existing cooperation, tailoring it to future requirements of Bhutan. He extended GoI’s support in strengthening research linkages, development of food processing facilities and export promotion initiatives for farmers.

The Government of India has extended a support of Nu. 354.066 million for the Livestock Development Project of Bhutan. The new Liquid Nitrogen Plant has been procured at a cost of Nu. 11.5 million under the Project and will produce 120 litres of Liquid  Nitrogen per day.

The Government of India remains committed to working together with the Government and the people of the Kingdom of Bhutan in further strengthening close ties of friendship and cooperation.
