Passport Services

The Embassy provides passport services to Indian nationals residing in Bhutan including issue of new passport. after completion of the required formalities. Passports are issued with validity period of 10 years. In respect of minors below 18 years, passports are issued with a validity period of 5 years till they attain the age of 18 years.

Issue of New Passport/Re-issue of Passport: An application for reissue of passport can be submitted from one year before expiry of passport. If applied for within three years after expiry of passport, application is processed as a reissue case; otherwise as a fresh case.

New Passport in lieu of lost/damaged passport: Applications Form for new passport in lieu of lost/damaged passport will need to be submitted along with the Police FIR about lost /damaged passport. A duplicate passport may not be issued for the second loss/damage of passport. Habitual losers of passports will be denied further passport facilities.

It may be noted that under the Passports Act 1967, it is an offence to give false information in the application. Passport facilities can be denied on grounds of suppression of factual information, submission of false particulars, willful damage of passport and/or making unauthorized changes in the passports. Penalties/fines can also be imposed under relevant sections and Passports can be impounded or revoked by the Government of India under the provisions of the Passport Act 1967.

Incomplete application forms are likely to be rejected.

Passport application form to be filled in online on the above-mentioned website. The application form should be accompanied by a covering letter addressed to, The Embassy of India, Thimphu, Bhutan. The following instructions are given on the website and may be read carefully before you begin the application:
 
  • Register by clicking on "Register" Link
  • Login with the registred login ID and Password on "User Login" link
  • In the Applicant Home Page, click on "Apply for Ordinary Passport/Emergency Certificate/Police Clearance Certificate/Surrender of Indian Passport/Diplomatic Passport/Official Passport/Identity Certificate" link to file a new application
  • After successful submission,take a printout of the online submitted form

The following documents be submitted along with the passport application form.


Photographs

  • Four passport size photographs
  • The photograph should be colored and have white background.
  • Size of photographs should be 3.5 cm x 3.5 cm. (Face length should be 2.5 cm)
  • Photograph must show full front view of the face and shoulder.

 Signature

  • Signatures of the applicant should be within the box specified and should not touch the borders.
  • In case of Minor who is unable to sign, a thumb impression (left for female & right for male) is required in the box provided for signature and either of parents to sign at column 19 of the passport form.

Documents Required

  • Proof of date of birth. (Birth Certificate issued by competent authority in India)
  • For child born abroad birth certificate issued by the Indian Embassy/Consulate.
  • Proof of permanent address in India. (Election ID Card/Ration Card/Residential Certificate issued by DM, etc.)
  • Proof of present address in Bhutan (post paid mobile bill; internet bill; letter from owner of house; In case of children studying in schools- I. Card/school certificate from principle; Telephone/electricity bill; letter from the employer or any other proof of residence in the jurisdiction of Embassy of India, Thimphu)
  • Educational Qualification (Matriculation/Graduation/Post Graduation Certificates, etc.) for ECNR.
  • For inclusion of spouse name Marriage Certificate/copy of passport of spouse wherein the name of the spouse is mentioned.
  • Work permit/trade license issued by RGoB (Proof of working in Bhutan). For family spouse and children’s stay permit/dependant card/letter by School Principal, if applicable.
  • Letter from the head of the Organization/Firm where the applicant is serving.
  • All copies of the documents should be self attested by the applicant; in case of minor, the copies should be attested by either parents.
  • All originals to be presented for verification.
  • Copy of the old passport in case of reissue of passport

MISCELLANEOUS SERVICES

Change of name:

  • Deed poll or Sworn Affidavit signed and attested by Magistrate.
  • Original newspaper cuttings announcing the change of name published in two leading daily newspaper (one local daily from the area of the applicant’s permanent address in India and another local daily of his present address in Bhutan).
  • Photocopy of Passport.

 Change of surname (In case of Marriage)

  • Marriage certificate issued by concerned Registrar of Marriage.
  • Photocopy of Passport of husband and wife.
  • Copy of marriage Affidavit regarding change of surname.

  Change of Permanent Address

  • Proof of changed address.
  • Domicile Certificate or Affidavit sworn before a Magistrate.
  • Photocopy of Passport.

 Change of Date of Birth/Place of Birth

  • Order from the First class Magistrate from applicant’s area of residence in India for change of DOB / POB.
  • In case, applicant has applied for both i.e. date and place of birth, an application is also required giving sufficient explanation as to why applicant had submitted wrong information earlier.
  • Photocopy of Passport.
