Press Release: Memorandum of Understanding on Nehru Wangchuck Scholarship

Press Release

On 17 January 2020, the Governments of Bhutan and India signed a Memorandum of Understanding to extend the prestigious Nehru-Wangchuck scholarship scheme for another five years.  The renewed MOU was signed by His Excellency Kinga Singye, Foreign Secretary of Bhutan, and Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, on behalf of the Governments of Bhutan and India respectively.

The Nehru-Wangchuck Scholarships are awarded to highly meritorious Bhutanese students, to enable them to pursue higher studies in India. The awardees are chosen jointly by the Royal Civil Service Commission and the Embassy of India, through a rigorous selection process.

The scheme was instituted in 2009, in order to implement Article 7 of the Indo-Bhutan Friendship Treaty of 2007, which mandates both countries to further enhance educational cooperation.  Since its institution, almost 100 Bhutanese students have secured admission to reputable Indian universities through this scholarship scheme, which fully covers all their expenses including tuition fees, travel costs, board & lodge, books & stationery, stipend etc.

The extension of the Nehru Wangchuck scholarship scheme reflects the understanding shared by both Governments of the importance of educational exchanges and for giving recognition to talented Bhutanese youth.
