Release of funds for Nehru-Wangchuck Scholarship - 2024

The Nehru-Wangchuck Scholarship was instituted in 2009 with the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of India and Royal Government of Bhutan. The annual budget outlay for Nehru-Wangchuck Scholarship was doubled from Nu 10 million to Nu 20 million during the historic visit of Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi to Bhutan in June 2014. The Scheme provides scholarships every year to the meritorious and deserving Bhutanese candidates, both from Government and private sector, for studying in the premier Indian Institutes. The successful candidates are awarded with handsome monthly stipend, along with coverage of all expenses during their studies. Till date, approx. 130 Bhutanese candidates have benefited under this Scheme.

2. An amount of Nu.24.64 million was released by Government of India to the Royal Civil Service Commission of Bhutan on 16 April 2024 towards funding of Nehru Wangchuck Scholarship Scheme.

3. The Scholarship Scheme is operated through Royal Civil Service Commission, in collaboration with Embassy of India, with the aim of capacity building and development of core competency areas and human resource capacities critical to Bhutan’s development.
